Disaster Kits
Programs that assemble and make available to the public equipment and supplies that people may need during the aftermath of a major disaster in situations where help is not immediately available. Disaster kits contain non-perishable food that requires little or no preparation and cooking, potable water, a well-stocked first aid kit, a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, extra batteries, personal grooming and sanitation supplies, non-prescription medication (e.g., aspirin, antacids and anti-diarrheal medication), bleach (for water-purification) and bedding. Some disaster kits may have special supplies for cold weather.
Personal Preparedness Equipment/Supplies
Programs that provide equipment and supplies that help individuals and families keep abreast of dangerous weather advisories or other critical information prior to or in the immediate aftermath of an emergency; offer personal protection during a chemical, biological or radiological attack or accident or other incident; or meet their short-term needs following an incident in situations where help is not immediately available.
