Description
Responsible for investigating crimes in Erie County, ensuring the fair prosecution of the accused, and obtaining justice for the victims.

The Domestic Violence Bureau division within the DA’s Office works to prosecute offenders and prevent them from harming victims in the future. Working with police, investigators, and victim advocates, the Bureau is responsible for the prosecution of all cases arising between domestic and intimate partners, i.e. crimes occurring between spouses, ex-spouses, family members who live together, and those involved in intimate relationships. Prosecutors assigned to the Domestic Violence Bureau receive specialized training and appear in all city, town, and village courts. They also staff several specialty courts, including the Buffalo City Court Domestic Violence Part, the Erie County Court Felony Domestic Violence Court, and the State Integrated Domestic Violence Court. Prosecutors are assisted by specially trained advocates and social workers from the BE SAFE Program within the Erie County District Attorney's Office who advocate with victims within the criminal courts and work to address their special needs and to ensure their safety. Can also provide supportive services and safety planning to survivors of domestic/intimate partner violence who do not have a pending criminal case against the offender. (See separate listing for BE SAFE Domestic Violence Program).

The Victim/Witness Services Bureau provides comprehensive, supportive services to all types of crime victims, witnesses and their families. (See separate listing for details).

As part of the office’s community engagement initiative, prosecutors and victim advocates provide presentations on domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, teen dating violence, consequences to driving while impaired by drugs/alcohol, cyberbullying, and other topics upon request to educate the community about criminal justice-related issues and prevent crime.
