Description

Provides hospice care.

Hospice care is appropriate for people with any advanced stage illness, not just cancer, where the prognosis is a life expectancy of approximately six months or less if the illness runs its normal course (strictly Medicaid recipients can receive care up to 12 months under the New York State hospice regulation). Some patients receive hospice care beyond six months. Care is given by an interdisciplinary team of skilled professionals and trained volunteers. Team includes a hospice physician, primary MD, nurse, social worker, pharmacist, spiritual care and bereavement counselor, hospice aide, and homemaker.

Niagara Hospice House provides services to Niagara Hospice patients and their families who are not able to receive home hospice care. Residential wing consists of 10 suites specifically designed for hospice patients in need of long term care. The inpatient wing has 10 suites designed for patients needing short-term medical monitoring and symptom management.

The Bereavement Department offers grief support to families in a variety of ways, available for 13 months after the passing of a loved one:
- Supportive telephone calls and mailings
- Individual and family grief counseling
- Bereavement workshops and groups for adults
- Memorial events throughout the year
- Resource materials on grief and loss
- Information and referral services
- E-newsletters
