Description
Works to achieve social and economic justice for people in New York State who are poor, disabled, or disenfranchised. Mission is to make the law work for all New Yorkers, especially for those who need its protection most.
Services include:
- Teaching the law by providing training, support, and technical assistance to legal services and private attorneys and other community-based advocates to help them better serve their clients.
- Practicing the law by providing direct civil legal assistance and undertaking impact litigation.
- Improving the law by engaging in policy analysis, research, and advocacy.
Provides direct representation to those with low and moderate incomes who are confronting complex legal issues, provides assistance to vulnerable and marginalized populations, and advocates in the courts in response to patterns and practices that are negatively affecting low and moderate income people across the state. Advocates are able to bring litigation on behalf of a class of people who are experiencing the same legal issue, achieving changes for hundreds of thousands of people at one time.
Issue areas include civil rights, crime victims, domestic violence, economic justice and housing (including direct representation to homeowners at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure), education, government benefits, immigration, health, social security/SSI, and workers' rights.
